SUMMARY:Water Technologies Symposium 2017
DESCRIPTION:About WaterTech 2017\n \nESAA is pleased to report that the 9th Annual WaterTech Symposium\, held in April 2016 was a huge success! Building on that success\, we are announcing WaterTech 2017 – the premier water technology transfer event for environmental professionals. Attendance at the eighth WaterTech exceeded all expectations\, with a waiting list for both delegates and exhibitors. WaterTech 2017 is highly recommended for all industry sectors that have an interest in the technical aspects of water and wastewater management. \nSince 2002\, ESAA has hosted the incredibly successful RemTech Symposium each October in Banff. Delegate & exhibitor numbers\, as well as sponsorship support\, increased steadily\, causing RemTech to outgrow its original venue after three years. Owing to the ongoing space limitations at RemTech\, ESAA has not been able to profile water technology to the level it deserves and delegates want. \nWaterTech gives us the opportunity to focus on a relevant and growing area of interest in the environmental sector. \nWho Should Attend?\nAttendance at WaterTech 2017 is highly recommended for all industry sectors that have an interest in the technical aspects of water and wastewater management including: \nAgriculture Companies\, Municipalities\, Engineering Firms\, Drilling Companies\, Pipeline Companies\, Natural Gas Producers\, Energy Marketers\, Environmental Consulting Firms\, Land Developers\, Governmental/Regulatory Bodies\, Aboriginal Groups\, Oil and Gas Service Companies\, Law Firms\, Financiers\, Mining Companies\, Waste Brokers and Managers\, etc… \nAbout the Host\nEstablished in 1987\, the Environmental Services Association of Alberta (ESAA) is one of Canada’s leading business associations with close to 250 member companies. Dedicated to building a strong environmental industry\, ESAA is an industry association with a business approach in providing programs that lead to its members’ corporate success. Visit our website for more information: www.esaa.org. \nSymposium Program\n \nThe two-day technical program will consist of a minimum of 40 platform presentations grouped into sessions chaired by environmental professionals. \nThe program will be developed from abstracts collected from across North America. A full listing of abstracts and presenter biographies will be available in the near future. \nSome areas and case studies being covered in the presentations will include: \nWater Resources and Water Quality\, Groundwater-Surface Water Interaction\, Groundwater and Surface Water Management\, Watershed Modelling\, Planning\, and Management\, Data Collection\, Monitoring\, and Testing\, Ecohydrology\, Protection and Sustainable Management of Water Resources\, Emerging Contaminants\, Disaster Planning\, Facility Operations\, Industrial Issues\, and Technologies\, Industrial and Municipal Wastewater Treatment\, Coal-bed Methane Development\, Deep Well Injection\, Beneficial Uses of Produced Water\, Water Conservation and Re-use\, Integrated Research\, Nanotechnology Applications\, Regulatory Issues\, Including Saline versus Non-Saline Water \nIn addition to the detailed technical program\, WaterTech 2016 will also include various networking sessions\, keynote speakers and a welcoming reception. \nWhat delegates are saying about WaterTech\n“Overall\, outstanding program delivery!” \n“Keep doing what you’re doing. That was the best conference I’ve been to. The content\, the organization\, the venue\, the speakers were excellent. Good job.” \n“As usual a terrific job. Not sure how one could improve upon perfection!! SUMMARY:MODERN MANAGEMENT OF RISKS AT LNAPL SITES
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nIntroduction: \nA revolution has occurred over the last decade with best practices for managing risks at LNAPL sites. \n  \nTen years ago we were using the thickness of LNAPL in wells to measure remediation progress\, we thought that LNAPL bodies only decayed very slowly\, and didn’t appreciate the importance of methanogenic reactions or understand how sheens and seeps work. Since then a body of work by top environmental researchers and practitioners\, with contributions from both short course presenters\, has revolutionized how we think about LNAPL sites and how we should control their risk. \nThis short course will describe these dramatic changes in the LNAPL world through thoughtfully-designed lectures\, interactive question and answer sessions\, illuminating in-class exercises\, and a lively participant panel discussion. \nThe foundation of the course is the recent update of: “Managing Risk at LNAPL Sites\, 2nd Edition” (Bulletin 18 from the American Petroleum Institute) by Dr. Tom Sale. For the field of remediation\, the 2003 1st edition was a best seller. Fifteen years later\, critical new knowledge has emerged offering the promise of better LNAPL solutions so that over 80 percent of the cited references in the 2nd edition are new and have been published since release of the 1st edition. \nThis course is designed to introduce participants to new strategies through new paradigms\, emerging technologies\, and more sustainable solutions for managing LNAPL sites. \n  \nRemarkable opportunities are open today to those versed in modern concepts and tools for LNAPL sites. \nConversely\, little time is left for managing LNAPL sites per past practices. \n  \nCourse Outline: \n\nA History of LNAPLs – Context About How We Got to Where We Are Today\nLNAPL Fundamentals\n\nMultiple-Phase Flow\nNatural Attenuation\nNatural Source Zone Depletion\n\n\nModern Site Conceptual Models\n\nRoles of Conceptual Models\nLegacy Approaches\nSoil and Groundwater Models\nGroundwater and Surface Water Interface Models\n14-Compartment Model\n\n\nModern Tools for LNAPL Characterizations\n\nLegacy Strategies and Approaches\nImpact of New Technologies\nThe Role of Geologic Context and Field Information\nEmerging Techniques and Technologies\nRevolution of Cloud-Based Information\n\n\nLNAPL Remediation Strategies\n\nHistorical Context\nActive LNAPL Depletion\nSheens and Seeps\nNatural Source Zone Depletion\nBioventing revisited\nBenzene\nLate stage chemical oxidation\nLow T Thermal\nVapor Intrusion Emerging Changes\n\n\nThe Future – Internet Based Monitoring\nDecision Guide Processes for Managing Risk\n\nImpact of Site Conceptual Model\nResolving Objectives: Technical\, Regulatory and Financial\nVision for Sustainability\n\n\nConcluding Workshop\n\nParticipant Panel\n\n\n\nBenefit from workshops that encourage thinking\, creativity\, technical mastery and managing LNAPL risk. \nWorkshops \n\n\n\nWorkshop 1:\nDeveloping an LNAPL Site Conceptual Model: Assessing Risk\, Tools for Characterization\, and Remedies\n\n\nWorkshop 2:\nExercise: LNAPL Presence\, Duration and Extent Given Active Releases\n\n\nWorkshop 3:\nExercise: List the Attributes of Early\, Middle and Late Stages Sites\n\n\nWorkshop 4:\nExercise: Recognizing and Managing Subsurface Uncertainties\n\n\nWorkshop 5:\nTools and Strategies for Characterizing Subsurface Releases: Differing Site Stage\n\n\nWorkshop 6:\nDiscussion: Primary Remedies for Subsurface Releases as a Function of Site Stage\n\n\n\n  \n\nBeing current with best practices for managing risk at LNAPL sites is essential to sustainable careers
